Environmental Scientist, Assistant Professor of Earth Sciences, 2-Year Visiting Position

The Department of Earth Sciences at The College of Wooster invites applications for a 2-year visiting position at the level of Assistant Professor, beginning in August 2024. We are seeking a broadly trained Environmental Scientist with a passion for teaching and mentoring. Applicants in all areas of environmental science or related fields are encouraged to (e.g. hydrology/hydrogeology, climate science, biogeoscience, ocean-atmospheric-cryosphere interactions, physical geography, near-surface geophysics, soil science, etc.). The ability to teach GIS is required. A Ph.D. is preferred, and ABD applicants will also be considered.

The College of Wooster is an independent college of the liberal arts and sciences with a commitment to excellence in undergraduate education. We enroll a racially, socioeconomically, and culturally diverse student population of approximately 1,960 undergraduate students, of which 6% identify as Latinx; 10% as Black/African American; 4%, as Asian; 4%, as multiracial; and 60%, as white. Fifteen percent (15%) of our students are studying on international visas. Twenty-five percent (25%) are Pell-eligible and 12% are first-generation college students. We are interested in hiring faculty who can contribute to the intellectual vibrancy of the community through culturally relevant pedagogy, curricular diversity, intercultural fluency, and a commitment to ensuring equitable outcomes for racially and ethnically minoritized and marginalized student groups.

The successful candidate will teach a combination of introductory and advanced courses for majors and non-majors (e.g., GIS and other courses in the area of expertise) and mentor students in our strong undergraduate research Independent Study program. We value candidates who can contribute to interdisciplinary programs connected with the Earth Sciences, such as Environmental Studies, Biology, Archaeology, Urban Studies, or Statistical & Data Sciences. The Department also is highly engaged in the College’s inclusive STEM initiatives, so we welcome candidates who could contribute to these programs and have experience working with diverse populations of students.

The Earth Sciences Department has 4 full-time faculty members and graduates approximately 12-20 majors annually, many of whom pursue advanced study and/or careers in the geosciences. Our active and vibrant GeoClub is a student organization that works closely with the department to organize and promote student events. Department facilities available for use include a GIS computing lab, X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, X-ray diffractometer, Tree Ring lab, stream table, paleontology collection, and a geochemistry lab, among other laboratory facilities and field equipment.
