About the Role

The School of Historical and Philosophical Studies invites applications from gender historians from all fields who possess the ability to teach women and gender history from a global and comparative perspective, with a preference for expertise in the modern period (1700-present).

As Teaching Specialist, the position will primarily coordinate two undergraduate classes in our history major: ‘HIST10017 Gender, Rights, and Power in History’ and ‘HIST20090 Gender in History, 1800 to the Present, collaborating closely with the Discipline Chair and colleagues.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, you may supervise 4th-year honours students, and contribute to the broader teaching and administrative activities within the discipline.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Coordination and teaching of HIST10017 ‘Gender, Rights, and Power in History (Sem 2, 2024) and ‘Gender in History, 1800-Present)’ (Sem 1, 2025)
  • Coordination of the teaching activities of specified subjects in the mode of delivery required (e.g. classroom, blended, online)
  • Development of teaching materials, including tutorial guidelines for tutors; subject guides, online readings, and regular maintenance of subject sites on the Learning Management System (LMS)
  • Delivering lectures and conducting tutorials or seminars to a high standard
  • Setting and marking assessment tasks where required
  • Selection of, consultation with, and supervision of tutors or seminar assistants (where applicable) and providing written tutorial guidelines regarding teaching, marking, and directed consultations with students
  • Supervision and examination of 4th-year honours theses

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking a passionate educator, with a completed or near-completed PhD in History, specialising in women and gender history.

With a demonstrated ability to teach at undergraduate level, you are capable of ensuring a highly inclusive student learning environment for students, while also providing support to tutoring staff. 

You have strong organisational skills as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to work with people from diverse cultural backgrounds.

You will also have:

  • A completed or near completed PhD in History with a focus on women and gender history
  • A capacity to supervise 4th-year honours research
  • Demonstrated strong record of undergraduate teaching experience, working positively and cooperatively with students, in a range of teaching delivery modes
  • Capacity to teach gender history from a global and comparative perspective
  • Experience in managing and supporting staff and fostering an effective teaching team
  • Capacity to deal effectively and efficiently with administrative tasks relevant to both teaching and research
  • Experience with using IT systems such as or comparable to the University of Melbourne’s Themis and the Learning Management System (LMS)
