Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

Overview
The Graduate Assistant for Communications provides communications-related assistance and support. As part of the Univeristy Honors (UH) team, the Graduate Assistant for Communications will have the opportunity to hone their social media, graphic design, website, organizational, and writing skills in highlighting the work and accomplishments of a thriving community of students, faculty, and staff.

Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities include assisting UH staff with social media, graphic design, website maintenance, coordination of communications workflows, weekly newsletters, larger scale projects as needed, and pitching/drafting stories that highlight the work of UH students, faculty, and staff. Whenever the Assistant Director of Communications is unavailable, the Graduate Assistant for Communications works to ensure that the program’s communications workflows continues to operate smoothly and on schedule, and that public-facing output is of consistent quality and reflects the program’s style and brand.

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:
  1. This position is open only to University of Maryland students enrolled and in good academic standing in a full-time graduate degree program.
  2. Eligible candidates will have strong skills in at least two of the following five areas (please elaborate on these skills in your cover letter and include samples of work where possible):
    • Graphic design
    • Social media
    • Website maintenance and/or design
    • Project management
    • Photography and/or videography
  3. Additional minimum qualifications include:
    • Strong interest in storytelling across many platforms
    • Exceptional writing, editing, verbal, creative, and organizational skills
    • Ability to work in a collaborative and inclusive team environment, as well as independently
    • Ability to take direction and execute assigned tasks accurately and on time
    • Experience (or the demonstrated ability to develop expertise) with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, Constant Contact, Monday, Google Drive, website content management systems (e.g., WordPress), and social media (i.e., Instagram, Facebook)
    • Attention to detail (including an appreciation for the Oxford comma)
    • Reliability and the willingness to learn and ask questions as needed are essential

  2. Formal educational and/or professional experience in one or more of the following areas: communications, social media management, academic affairs, student affairs, graphic design, multi-media, journalism

  • This is a 20-hour per week, 9-month graduate assistantship.
  • Work will be completed primarily in-person during business hours.
  • Some telework will be possible.
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours may be required to support program events.

Physical Demands:
Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment. Regularly required to communicate and exchange information and to use technology/devices. Must have the ability to lift and deliver small carry parcels, packages and other items. With notice, must have the ability to attend events after normal business hours. Must have the ability to travel to meetings, events, etc. both on and off campus.
