General Summary:
Vertex Pharmaceuticals has an exciting opportunity for a Director to lead the Electrophysiology group within the Pharmacology Department. This is an onsite position at our San Diego drug discovery site.
The Director will have an impressive track record of accomplishments in drug discovery and project advancement and will be recognized as an emerging thought leader in the fields of electrophysiology and ion channel pharmacology. The successful candidate will have deep experience in the use and interpretation of in vitro cellular electrophysiology and plate-based pharmacology assays (Ca2+-imaging, patch clamp electrophysiology, automated electrophysiology etc.) and have experience with in-vitro assays utilizing primary human cells. The Director will be adept at cross-functional collaboration and talent development and will report to the Senior Director, Pharmacology.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Manages the activities of the electrophysiology group in Pharmacology.
- Helps craft Department goals and ensures linkage to project goals in support of the corporate goals.
- Monitors the activities of staff and provides them guidance to succeed and grow.
- Manages hiring for the group.
- Aligns group activities to company priorities, and adapts resources as needed, to ensure key goals are met on time.
- Seeks out and plans scientific direction for the group and nurtures technological innovation.
- Responsible for maintaining high quality of all laboratory records, electronic database entries, internal reports, patents, and external communications from the group.
- Communicates company objectives to the group and availability of groups resources and methods to project teams in a clear and timely manner.
- Organizes preparation of clear scientific reports for project teams, senior management, other departments, and collaborators, and presents reviews of Group progress when called upon.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Outstanding competence in a leadership role, with a track record of successfully developing people.
- Highly developed scientific leadership qualities, with a track record of success in areas such as target identification, target validation, compound identification, mechanism of action, and compound advancement.
- A deep knowledge of fundamental pharmacology principles and a demonstrated record of applying these principles in vitro or in vivo.
- A distinguished record enabling the goals of research projects.
- A champion of scientific excellence and integrity in own scientific discipline and/or area of pursuit.
- A robust understanding of small molecule drug discovery and development, and therapeutic areas such as pain, neuroscience, pulmonary or kidney disease.
- Ability to communicate clearly and precisely (reading/writing and verbal) with all levels of an organization.
- Ability to make data driven decisions and translate data into actionable knowledge.
- Demonstrates exceptional attention to detail in overseeing the design, execution, and analysis of experiments and scientific documentation.
- A proven track record of successfully developing diverse talent.
- Ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
Education and Experience:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) and 9 years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
- Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) and 12 years of relevant employment experience, or
- Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) and 15 years of relevant employment experience
Pay Range:
$192,000 - $288,000Disclosure Statement:
The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
