Position Summary/Purpose of Position:
A Postdoctoral position is available in the Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research at University of Maryland College Park to study the role of plant mobile mRNAs in the induction of graft induced pathogen resistance. This multi-year position is within Dr. James Culver’s laboratory and will investigate rootstock and scion molecular signals that contribute to defense induction and developmental phenotypes https://doi.org/10.1111/mpp.13353. It is anticipated that results from this study will have broad implications toward understanding desirable graft induced traits as well as developing strategies to engineer theses induced phenotypes into new economically important crop systems.
Responsibilities:
- Investigate the role of graft mobile mRNAs in induced disease resistance, determine if scion derived mobile elements contribute to graft induced resistance, examine the ability of identified graft-mobile mRNAs to confer resistance in novel rootstock – scion combinations.
- Develop bioinformatic workflows for the analysis, visualization and publication of genomic, RNAseq and metabolomic based studies.
- Assist in the mentoring of graduate, undergraduate and high school students.
- Present findings at conferences and through publications.
IBBR is a joint research enterprise of the University of Maryland, College Park, the University of Maryland, Baltimore, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. IBBR leverages state-of-art integrative methods for bioanalytical, biophysical and structural characterization of biomolecules: cryo-electron microscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, x-ray crystallography, small angle neutron and x-ray scattering and mass spectrometry. IBBR researchers seek to advance therapeutic development, biomanufacturing, and state-of-the-art measurement technologies, to support accelerated delivery of safe and effective medicines to the public.
