Santa Fe College's Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to provide first generation and/or low-income high school students in Bradford High School with the academic skills and motivation necessary to succeed in their pre-college studies. The program's focus is high school success, persistence and college going culture.

 

Job Description

The Upward Bound Part-time Senior Instructional Specialist is responsible for providing supplemental instruction support and homework help to students in a variety of subjects including English (Reading and Writing), Mathematics, History, Social Science, the Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Foreign Languages (Spanish), and Computer Technologies.  The schedule includes two Saturdays each month.  

The successful candidate must have a strong work ethic, as well as a passion for helping students and a commitment to academic success for educationally, disadvantaged youth.  The successful candidate would also have the ability to work a flexible schedule to accommodate the needs of the Upward Bound program. The Upward Bound Part-time Instructor must be skilled in the assigned academic discipline of instruction with the ability to deliver a high level of interactive classroom instruction.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide classroom instruction for the assigned subject area in accordance with overall Upward Bound program objectives, established UB curriculum, and student progress.
  • Assist with the development and preparation of UB curriculum, lesson plans, pre-post testing, course syllabi and other course materials.
  • Monitor student's access and use or UB academic support resources (e.g. CANVAS courses, ALEKS).
  • Mentor students in preparation for college, providing leadership, information, and guidance about college and college culture.
  • Help students develop good study skills and test taking strategies.
  • Provide group and individualized tutoring sessions and homework support for UB scholars in grades 9-12.
  • Assist students with the development of study skills and good test taking strategies.
  • Inform coordinator of any academic or disciplinary issues that hinder tutorial and academic success.
  • Participate in TRIO and other types of professional development opportunities.
  • Assist with documentation to certify accurate and timely record keeping regarding student conduct, attention and academic progress, as well as other forms and information.
  • Strictly honor student confidentiality and exhibit sensitivity toward Upward Bound participants.
  • Participate in the Upward Bound team activities: attend training sessions, field trips, staff meetings and other events as necessary.
  • Provide service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Coordinator, Upward Bound

Qualifications

Required: A Bachelor's degree in relevant subject matter area and at least two (2) years of closely related work experience is required.

Additional Requirements:  A criminal background check will be conducted.

Preferred: Experience in teaching and/or tutoring high school aged students and experience working with low-income, first generation college bound populations.  Candidates who have a teaching certificate are preferred. Preference will be given to qualified individual who have overcome barriers similar to those experienced by Upward Bound program participants.

  • Organization & Time Management - able to plan, schedule, and organize tasks related to the job to achieve goals within or ahead of established time frames.
  • Systems & Software - proficient level of knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or relevant position software programs.
  • Team Orientation & Interpersonal - highly motivated team player with ability to develop and maintain collaborative relationships with all levels within and external to the organization.
