Summary of Position

The University of New Hampshire College of Liberal Arts Department of Theatre and Dance seeks a full-time Technical Director position, starting August 15th, 2024. (If the candidate already committed to a summer position, this start date is negotiable.) It is a 12-month contract full-time, year-round staff position. The Technical Director is responsible for overseeing the technical operation of the theatre, including planning, executing, and realizing the scenery and prop element for the Department of Theatre and Dance Main-stage productions. The successful candidate will work in a highly collaborative department that seeks to provide students with rigorous training while also providing the diversity of thought and study expected from an outstanding liberal arts institution.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide and maintain a safe environment for the students in the production process.
  • Develop and coordinate safety procedures for the scene shop and the performance spaces.
  • Oversee and execute the scenery and prop elements for department productions, including but not limited to:
    1. Budget for the scenic and prop designs and ensure the design can be executed within the budget.
    2. Create technical drawings based on the information set designers provide for construction.
    3. Create and implement construction plans and schedules.
    4. Work with the set designer and the creative team to ensure the scenery execution fits the artistic vision of the production.
    5. Supervise and participate in the scenery construction and property execution.
    6. Supervise and lead scenery load-in, installation, and strike.
    7. Provide support for related technical areas such as lighting, sound, and projection.
    8. Supervise the technical rehearsals and provide technical support during the performances.
  • Assist with hiring and supervising the student Technical Assistants and work-study employees.
  • Supervise Stagecraft class Labs in the safe use and care of tools, equipment, and the space.
  • Provide educational support for students studying Theatre Design and Technology.
  • Provide technical support for departmental activities.
  • Manage, maintain, and improve the scene shop and scenery/property storage spaces.
  • Manage, maintain, and improve the inventories and equipment in the theatre and the scene shop.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Design and Theatre Technology and Department Administrative Manager to manage production budgets.
  • Non-standard work schedule including evenings and weekends during load-ins, technical rehearsals, and strikes.
  • Provide technical support for spring/summer tours as well as summer youth camps.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Chair of the Department.

Other minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Theatre or other applicable field.
  • Five years professional Technical Director experience in the field.
  • Experience in theatre operation and the ability to manage the production processes.
  • Thorough knowledge of technical theater, scenery construction, carpentry, rigging and computer-aided-design drafting Vectorworks or AutoCad.
  • Knowledge in the related technical theatre areas such as lighting, sound, video production, and projection.
  • Strong organization, collaboration, communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of first aid, certificate and/ or health & training such as OSHA-30.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • BA/BFA or higher degree in Technical Theatre and Production.
  • Experience in working at a higher education institution.
  • Experience in set, lighting, sound, or projection design.
  • Experience in aerial dance rigging.
  • Experience in media production including networking, green screen, camera operation, video editing.
  • Experience in multimedia software suach as Adobe Photoshop, After Effect, Premiere, vMix, Watchout, QLab, and other digital modeling software.
