Position Summary/Purpose of Position:

The Department of Geographical Sciences based at the University of Maryland College Park is currently seeking to hire a full-time Assistant Director of Administrative Services. The Department of Geographical Sciences supports integrative research in the physical and social sciences that spans local to global scales, with an emphasis on a geospatial perspective of our changing planet and its sustainability in our state, the nation and the global community.

The Department of Geographical Science administrative office is responsible for management of approximately 189 accounts as well as ~250 full and part time staff and faculty. The Administrative staff of the office support a wide range of tasks, including financial/accounting, operational, administrative/personnel, and procurement actions.

The Assistant Director of Administrative Services will be responsible for managing aspects of the business services of the Department. This includes payroll activities, human resources, procurement, reimbursements, travel, and sponsored research administration.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required.

Experience:
A minimum of seven years of progressive and related business operations and federal grant management experience are required, preferably in an academic environment. 2 or more years of supervisory experience is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Familiar with developing budget projections, grant proposals, post award management, payroll and visa regulations. 
  • Proficient in using excel spreadsheets. 
  • Experience with UMD administrative systems including Workday, KFS,PHR, ShellShop, Concur and Priority software. 
  • Supervisory experience is required. 
  • Successful candidate will possess excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to handle multiple, sometimes competing priorities, and provide excellent outcomes within required deadlines. 
  • Proven analytical skills are required, proactive solution orientation is a must, as well as the ability to be responsive to the needs of faculty, staff and graduate students.

Additional Information:

Salary range $80,000-$100,000.

Physical Demands

This is a sedentary position performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards. This position is required to have the ability to move freely about the campus to attend meetings multiple times a week. May need to lift and carry packages up to 10lbs.
