Essential Job Duties

The primary purpose of the Campus Planner is to provide expertise in planning for long-term campus development projects, strategic campus initiatives, and space analysis and management within the Campus Planning department. The Campus Planner will work closely with various units within the Facilities Division and key stakeholders across the university to guide the physical development of the campus. The role may involve managing external design teams, conducting in-house studies, and providing data-driven space analysis to support informed decision-making.

Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Translate the university’s strategic objectives into physical campus development, including buildings and infrastructure, to meet institutional goals.
  • Serve as the technical expert, providing design solutions for architectural, interior, and engineering challenges to address campus development needs.
  • Analyze, document, and develop plans, policies, and procedures, and informal project designs to support the university’s physical infrastructure.
  • Develop facilities planning strategies, space programs, and architectural studies, including coordination with building systems (MEP) and lab analysis.
  • Propose and evaluate alternative design options and recommend planning solutions in line with the Physical Master Plan.
  • Assist in providing recommendations on the implementation of the Physical Master Plan, including architecture, interior design, and land use planning, through schematic designs, feasibility studies, and development plans considering the various facility components of the campus.
  • Collaborate on projects involving infrastructure, mobility systems, ADA accessibility, and general campus development.
  • Lead and coordinate key campus planning meetings, including the Campus Development Committee (CDC) process, ensuring a proactive and inclusive approach to planning.
  • Consult on and approve campus development plans, building designs, utility systems, site plans, and infrastructure projects.
  • Represent the university as a subject matter expert in front of internal and external stakeholders, including campus administration, regulatory bodies, and building committees, to provide consultation and technical guidance.
  • Anticipate and resolve complex issues related to campus development, design, and project implementation.
  • Facilitate a transparent, collaborative planning process with a focus on achieving the highest standards for campus development.
  • Provide expert consultation, evaluation, planning, design, design, and review of campus development projects, including buildings, utility systems, site plans, mapping, and infrastructure.
  • Oversee project management and provide guidance to staff, guiding major campus planning efforts and ensuring projects comply with building codes and zoning regulations. The position may also carry authority for project approvals.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the Engineering discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require licensure by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications

  • Strong working knowledge of architecture and/or engineering principles.
  • Experience in developing planning and design strategies for diverse building types.
  • Experience with capital project budgeting and cost estimation.
  • Ability to evaluate, develop, and manage processes, procedures, and guidelines related to campus planning and development.
  • Proficient knowledge of standard design and construction practices.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect and interact with a variety of stakeholders and campus leadership.
  • Ability to proficiently operate a personal computer and a variety of software for email, word processing, spreadsheets, database & information collection.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with architecture design for complex projects, strategic planning for the physical campus, and/or space planning & programming.
  • Experience with university design and planning projects either as a consultant or university/institutional experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of university planning efforts, including master planning, campus project development (new construction and renovations), and space programming.
