Our paid internship program is thoughtfully curated to provide students with experience and exposure to the healthcare industry. Interns will be given the opportunity to get hands-on experience with real work projects, build meaningful relationships and connections within the organization, and experience our mission and enterprise goals through our program curriculum centered on our leadership model (Personal, People, Thought, and Results Leadership). Our Summer 2025 Internship is June 9th or June 16th through August 15th, 2025.

As interns at Blue Shield of California, interns:
- Must reside in the state of California for the duration of the internship
- Hybrid requirements - Preferably live within a 50-mile radius from a Blue Shield of CA office
- Participate in impactful projects during their 10-week program
- 10-week curriculum designed to familiarize interns with BSC, leadership development, exposure to the healthcare industry, and more
- Are invited to participate in BSC employee events such as Employee Resource Groups, Employee volunteer activities, and more
Your Role
The Actuarial Intern will report to an actuarial team manager. In this role, you will gain a deep understanding of the healthcare industry's basic practices, develop technical skills, and contribute lasting models and analyses that help make healthcare sustainably affordable.
Your Work
In this role, you will:
- Support the analytics needed to optimize our membership, cost of healthcare, and revenue
- Develop tools and exhibits to improve our marketability in our highly competitive environment
- Learn or improve upon all coding languages as necessary
- Support the analytics needed to understand network configuration scenarios and/or provider contract negotiation
- Develop a deep understanding of healthcare industry provider reimbursement structures
- Be a part of the industry movement towards value-based care
- Gain understanding of how actuarial work connects to Blue Shield of California's mission to create a healthcare system that is worthy of our family and friends and sustainably affordable
Your Knowledge and Experience
- Serious interest in pursuing an actuarial career by having taken at least 1 actuarial exam
- Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field, such as Mathematics, Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Economics, or Actuarial Science
- Preferred 1-2 years of related professional experience, project, or coursework
- A robust analytical skill-set (Microsoft Excel proficiency experience is required)
- Financial acumen and ability to synthesize data into insights and/or reporting
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Strong relationship management and interpersonal skills
- Ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines
Pay Range:
The pay range for this role is: $25.00 to $30.00 for California.

Please note that this range represents the pay range for this and many other positions at Blue Shield that fall into this pay grade. Blue Shield salaries are based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, location (California, Bay area, or outside California), and current employee salaries for similar roles
