The individual in this position performs corrective and preventive maintenance of campus electrical equipment. This person serves as the electrical trade’s expert for improvements to campus infrastructure and safety Programs. Performs installation of electrical systems in accordance with applicable County codes. Other duties as assigned by the supervisor including, but not limited to assisting during emergency situations (e.g. school closings, power outages, inclement weather conditions, bomb threats.)

Essential Functions:
- Responds to service calls.
- Locates and determines electrical malfunctions in wiring, switchgear, over current protection devices, lights, controls, motors, heaters, alarms and other electrical apparatus.
- Repairs malfunctions by replacing failed elements in the field or in the shop using accepted trade practices.
- Makes modifications to existing electrical equipment to keep in compliance with electrical codes.
- Inspects circuits/equipment for specified shielding, grounding and over current protection.
- Researches ways to reduce energy consumption through the use of new programs, technologies and equipment.
- Provides input to other campus departments with respect to electrical impacts of their projects during and after the planning phase.
- Provides recommendations to new building or other capital project specifications as requested.
- Instructs junior personnel in the safe operation of electrical equipment as directed.
- Obtains necessary electrical permits for installation of new electrical systems and components with respect to Facilities Department projects.
- Monitors outside electrical contractor activities as assigned.
Additional Duties:
Performs other related work as required.
Minimum Education and Training
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience of electrical work in an institutional or commercial setting at Journeyman’s level.
- Valid Journeyman’s licensePREFERRED TRAINING
- Valid Maryland Master Electrician Licenses for Charles, St. Mary’s, and Calvert County
Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Ability to proficiently read and interpret schematics and blueprints.
- Thorough knowledge of the proper use and care of hand tools associated with the trade.
- Insurability under the college vehicle liability insurance plan
Physical Requirements:
The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
