Essential Job Duties
The NC State Consumer and Community Horticulture program is seeking a Program Manager to lead the development and direction of the Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox and the online learning program, including the certification series Gardens, Lawns and Landscapes, and Plant Identification. As the program manager, you will:
- Recruit and manage an advisory team of stakeholders.
- Conduct a needs assessment, including surveying Extension Agents, Extension Master Gardener volunteers, current and former students, and other Extension horticulture programs across the country.
- Review existing offerings and adapt based on findings.
- Develop marketing strategies
- Manage and report finances
- Evaluate and report impacts, present at conferences, publish academic articles
- Identify and pursue funding opportunities to support program initiatives
- Manage administrative tasks related to the program.
- Plant Toolbox
- Create, integrate, and curate content (text, images, audio & video).
- Recruit and manage volunteers.
- Quality assurance.
- Online Courses
- Develop and teach courses on the Moodle and Top Hat learning management platforms.
- Manage registration through the NC State REPORTER system.
- Explore creating an informal alumnae group to periodically contact with information to continue their connection, support, and marketing options.
- Support the consumer and community horticulture team.
Opportunities and Expectations
- Develop the NC State Consumer and Community Horticulture plant database and online learning program into a flagship Extension program.
- Generate adequate cost-recovery funds to support your salary and programmatic needs and funding to create and grow an NC State Consumer and Community Horticulture endowment.
Other Responsibilities
- Participate in training to remain current in research-based information on consumer horticulture, volunteer management, and related technology.
- Other duties as required/assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
Other Required Qualifications
- Expertise in Consumer Horticulture and Botany: Extensive knowledge and experience in consumer horticulture and botany, with a proven ability to develop and manage programs effectively.
- Collaboration and Leadership: Experience working effectively with students, volunteers, staff, and faculty. Proven team and program leadership skills that foster an inclusive, collaborative, and productive environment.
- Program Development and Management: Ability to develop, implement, and manage programs while driving meaningful change. Strong collaborative skills, enabling effective teamwork in various settings.
- Online Teaching and Course Management: Proficient in developing and facilitating online learning programs using Moodle and Top Hat teaching platforms.
- Effective Communication: Strong written and oral communication skills that promote mutual respect, a shared vision, and goal alignment among students, volunteers, staff, and faculty.
- Integrity and Accountability: Committed to serving with high integrity and trustworthiness as a critical partner to the Extension Specialist, demonstrating sound judgment, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Adaptability and Flexibility: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, complex academic environment while satisfying multiple constituencies and managing competing priorities.
- Technological Proficiency: Competent in database management and technological tools, ensuring efficient program delivery.
- Customer Service Orientation: Strong customer service skills with a capacity to respond effectively to stakeholder needs.
- Availability: Willingness to participate in occasional evening and weekend activities as required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree(s) and certifications(s) that aid in recruiting and teaching students.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Valid Driver’s License and the ability to obtain a NC Drvier’s License within 60 days of hire. A valid Driver’s License must be maintained throughout employment.
