Primate Breeding Farm Manager
Job Description
We are seeking a Primate Breeding Farm Manager who will manage the daily operation of the Johns Hopkins University Primate Breeding Farm according to standard operating procedures to ensure a quality animal care and use program that supports research and teaching at Johns Hopkins University. The Animal Facilities Manager is responsible for managing a breeding colony of around 600 rhesus and pigtailed macaques in coordination with veterinary, behavioral management, and facilities personnel. Must have interest and experience with the behavior, care, and welfare of non-human primates. Will supervise the activities of 6 or more full-time primate keeper staff with authority to hire, train, evaluate performance, coach, discipline, and terminate in consultation with HR.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
- Ensure the day-to-day processes of the facility and provide oversight of all operations related to the husbandry and care of the primate breeding colony.
- Maintain the animal facility to meet the standards of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare Act, the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, and other state, federal and local animal welfare laws and regulations, and internal SOPs.
- Responsible for the management of all primate keepers: Ensure they complete all tasks effectively and safely and that all employees are productive, develop professionally, and follow SOPs. This includes, conducting on-the-job training and orientation for new staff and the continued evaluation of staff performance.
- Responsible for the daily supervision of all primate keepers: Plan and coordinate the activities of the primate keepers. Develop and implement staffing schedules to ensure that the farm has staff coverage seven days a week including on holidays. Delegate responsibilities and duties as appropriate.
- Responsible for the ordering of all required supplies, included animal feed, bedding, PPE, cleaning products, and office supplies, and maintaining sufficient inventories to meet the needs of the animal care area.
- Provide oversight of all aspects of resource and facilities management, including caging maintenance, construction projects, staff and auxiliary areas, and support systems.
- Monitor the health status of all animals, communicate all concerns with veterinary personnel, and arrange for veterinary care as needed.
- Review and maintain daily animal census records and area logs, as well as other required documentation and check sheets.
- Track population census and production to aid with acquisitions, sales, and forecasting resource needs for the colony.
- Responsible for writing, reviewing, editing SOPs.
- Lead weekly all-staff meetings to ensure good communication across all teams that work at the facility.
- Maintain regular communication with direct reports as well as faculty, staff, trainees, and students conducting work at the farm, including coordination with visiting professionals and researchers.
- Provide faculty and other leadership with regular reports on the status of the colony and the facility, as well as other related activity, such as construction projects, shipments and deliveries, schedule changes, and research activity.
- Set facility goals and suggest changes to improve the efficiency and quality of animal care. Identify problems and develop and implement solutions in collaboration with veterinary and behavioral management teams.
- Coordinate and work collaboratively with veterinarians and behavioral management teams regarding preventive medicine, clinical treatments, and reproductive group formations
- Take corrective action if SOPs are not being followed by primate keeper staff.
- Coordinate with facilities personnel to develop and implement schedules for routine building, infrastructure, and grounds maintenance including structural, plumbing, heating and electrical repairs.
- Make recommendations for capital equipment purchases and repairs.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule including rotating weekends and holidays and to work in an outdoor environment across all seasons.
Required skills and experience
- Basic computer skills (i.e. familiarity with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) is required; familiarity with electronic health record systems is preferred
- Good communication skills (both written and verbal), conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
- At least 5 years of progressive experience working with animals.
- An understanding of primate behavior and animal husbandry.
- Familiarity with the USDA Animal Welfare Act.
- At least 5 years of progressive leadership/management experience and demonstrated success in leading a team in a dynamic environment is required.
- Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Husbandry, Biological Sciences, or related field.
- Experience in facilities design and construction is preferred.
- Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist’s level is preferred.
