Dairy Records Management System (DRMS), based in the Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State University, is recruiting an exceptional leader to be the next Director. The Director will report to the Head of the Department of Animal Science and will collaborate closely with the DRMS Advisory Board, and the Chair of the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University.
DRMS provides cow and herd management information plus software to dairy farmers located in 44 states and Puerto Rico. These dairy farmers are members of Dairy Herd Improvement Associations (DHIAs). DRMS aggregates and edits data keyed into its software by dairy farmers and DHIA field technicians at any of 8,000+ dairy farms. Its software merges on-farm data with results of lab analyses for milk samples collected from each cow and produces management information for herd management. DRMS develops software that is used for many functions, including data collection, lab management, data integration, record computation, report generation, print center management, data backup and business management for DHIAs. The software operates on web, desktop and mobile platforms. Additionally, DRMS software interfaces with various technologies that collect on-animal sensor outputs.
Essential Job Duties
The Director is the strategic leader for DRMS and provides visionary leadership to a complex scientific and business enterprise. The successful candidate will lead strategic, staffing, business, software development and customer service functions, and the process of ongoing planning and implementing the DRMS programs and organizational structure. This critical and highly visible role involves cultivating relationships with the DHIAs, producers, academic and public spheres and, will be the public representative for DRMS.
Knowledgeable, progressively responsible, and professional experience with the Dairy Industry. A proven track record of cultivating relationships with stakeholders, industry, academia, and/or government agencies. Knowledge of the dairy economy is a plus. A proven record of creating a vision as well as implementing a strategic plan built upon that vision.
DRMS Leadership duties will include:
- Lead DRMS including implementing operational policy and best practices.
- Identify and lead external collaborations with private, academic, government and non-profit organizations to create and implement guiding principles and platforms.
- Lead and support DRMS information technology staff to deliver superior dairy herd management information systems and applications.
- Lead and support DRMS customer service staff to provide top-notch support and prompt service to customers and stakeholders.
- Ensure consistent and continued strong support for current products and services for producers in conjunction with realignments for future platforms.
- Direct the planning, developing, revising, coordinating, and monitoring of the annual operational and capital budgets.
- Identify, propose and lead strategic actions as they relate to DRMS technology planning and organizational development.
- Represent DRMS at producer and scientific events. Present clear and transparent presentations that convey the organization’s mission, values and achievements.
- Monitor regulations and communicate guidelines to key stakeholders in the global competitive landscape and regulatory environment.
- Foster, through their experiences, an environment that is welcoming of all groups.
- Lead and support DRMS staff to deliver superior dairy herd management information systems and support to DRMS customers and stakeholders.

Minimum Education and Experience
- M.S degree or a bachelor’s degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience in a scientific discipline or field applicable to position.
- Demonstrated success in leading people and teams to deliver high-quality products on time and ensuring a return on investment that can align with DRMS’ nonprofit mission.

- Proven leadership experience.
- Experience leading interdisciplinary work or teams.
- Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate diplomatically with broad and diverse audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster collaboration and interdisciplinary interactions among staff and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with flexibility, efficiency, and diplomacy, both individually and as part of a complex team effort.
Preferred Qualifications
- A PhD or DVM

- Valid NC driver’s license or the ability to obtain within 60 days of start.
