Job Description:

Fulfills the mission of Norwich University by ensuring the safety and security of university students, employees and visitors on the University Campus.  Utilizing a community-based policing model to support our university's vision, mission and guiding values the Officer patrols campus on foot and by vehicle to maintain good order and discipline on the campus while serving as an important community resource.

This position is 52 weeks/year, 40 hours/ week. Shifts are either 10:00pm - 8:00am Wednesday - Saturday or 4:00pm - 2:00am Wednesday - Saturday. 

Salary: $18.45/hour or more depending on experience plus shift differential 

Essential Functions

  1. Ensures the safety and protection of students, employees, and visitors and their personal property, while maintaining good order and discipline.
  2. Builds partnerships and maintains a friendly and respectful relationship with students, faculty, and staff to help resolve problems and issues that arise on campus.
  3. Works with the faculty, administration, and the student body to maintain a campus-wide perspective in matters pertaining to security and safety.
  4. Transports students as needed for a safety, illness, or injury. 
  5. Provides emergency transportation service for the University, as directed by proper authority.
  6. Investigates noise and disturbance complaints, reports of theft, accidents, assaults, or other crimes as directed by the Chief of Public Safety.   
  7. Respond to all campus fire or emergency calls.
  8. Consistently enforces Norwich University Rules and Regulations, including parking regulations, and reports criminal violations to the Northfield Police in accordance with Norwich University policy. 
  9. Operates the Emergency notification system for the university.
  10. Notifies the proper University officials, in the event of a major incident, i.e., fire, serious water leaks, serious injury, death, or any other catastrophe. 
  11. Provides and maintains a constant foot and vehicle patrol during a tour of duty.
  12. Keeps an up-to-date and accurate log of all patrol activities and incidents that occur during a tour of duty.
  13. Generates Incident Reports for all crimes, injuries, major incidents or as directed by the Chief of Public Safety.
  14. Records by receipt and in the duty log, any money or valuables turned into the Public Safety Office, maintains positive control over all accepted items, and releases them to the proper owner or custodian as soon as possible. 
  15. Locks/unlocks University buildings as per the buildings schedule or as needed and turns off lights in unmanned buildings whenever possible. 
  16. Notes all campus deficiencies in the log, i.e., burned out light bulbs and reports to university maintenance scheduler.
  17. When needed, answers incoming Public Safety telephone lines. 
  18.  Acts as the 24 hour a day, 7 days a week information hub for the University. 
  19. Keeps informed on university current events in order to pass along accurate information to outside callers.
  20. Assists students and University personnel in locating persons in an emergency situation. 
  21. Performs office administrative duties as assigned.
  22. Follows all safety policies and procedures.
  23. Completes all required training as determined by the Chief of Public Safety, including Campus Safety Authority (CSA) training required by the US Department of Education.

Other Functions

  1. Maintains confidentiality of sensitive or private information.
  2. Communicates with employees, students, and others in a respectful and clear manner.
  3. Serves on University committees, councils, workgroups, or other designated bodies as assigned.
  4. Achieves, maintains proficiency in, and utilizes computers, telephones, and other job-related equipment, including related systems and software.
  5. Speaks, reads, and writes in English.
  6. Communicates by telephone, email, letter, in person, or other means or device.
  7. Performs other tasks as assigned by supervisor.

 


Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college courses in criminal justice or law enforcement preferred.
  • At least 2 years of security, public safety, or law enforcement.
  • CPR certified or the ability to gain certification.
  • Valid driver's license throughout period of employment and no record of traffic violations.
  • Knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Act and/or FERPA preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams, and Outlook)
  • Able to sit, squat, reach, push, pull, and manipulate related equipment; lift 50 pounds; push or pull up to 150 pounds; travel outdoors on foot to various parts of the campus; walk one mile within 20 minutes; climb stairs carrying prescribed equipment; pass a pre-employment physical.
  • Able to work independently with little or no supervision.
  • Works evening, overnight, weekend and holiday hours.

Environmental Conditions

  • Indoor work at a computer workstation and outdoors
  • Medium to high level of exposure to noise, dust, fumes, vibrations, and temperature changes.
