POSITION TITLE: Painter & Finish Carpenter
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Science Writer and Communications Officer is responsible for the duties of primary writer focused on translational research and drug discovery-related topics. This role also serves as a liaison and point person for communicating the Institute's scientific excellence and impact related to drug discoveries, particularly the work done at the Calibr-Skaggs Institute through our earned, owned, and paid channels. Includes identifying feature and news stories ideas, interviewing and coordinating with institute leadership, faculty, students, and other sources, and writing accessible, accurate and intriguing copy.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Apply paint, varnish, stains, and other finishes using brushes, rollers, and sprayers. Ensure even coverage, proper color, and texture matching.
- Perform common area painting & wall repairs in lobbies, corridors, bathrooms, offices, elevators, parking lots, handrails, exteriors, pumps, equipment, etc.
- Assist in coordinating lab or office relocations including installation of tank restraints, shelves, TV's and various scientific equipment.
- Measure, cut, and install various types of trim and molding to enhance the aesthetic appeal of interiors.
- Analyze and understand blueprints and technical drawings to ensure accurate execution of design plans.
- Skillfully operate a variety of hand and power tools, including saws, routers, sanders, and drills, to shape and finish wood components.
- Maintain high standards of precision and quality in all carpentry work, paying close attention to detail to avoid mistakes.
- Work closely with other facility team members, or outside parties, to ensure seamless integration of finish carpentry with other aspects of the building process.
- Follow safety protocols and guidelines to prevent accidents and injuries, ensuring a safe working environment for all team members.
- Analyze the cost of materials, labor, overhead, and other expenses to ensure all factors are considered in the product pricing.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained.

Minimum of 4 years of directly related experience.

Thorough knowledge of painting techniques and general knowledge of building construction techniques.

Requires professional interpersonal, communication, and written skills.

Ability to lift and carry heavy objects, with or without accommodation, up to 50 pounds and work under time constraints.

Requires valid driver license issued from the state in which the position is located.
- This is an on-campus position requiring 4 days per week working onsite from our La Jolla campus, with flexibility to work 1 day per week remotely from home.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
With or without reasonable accommodation, employees in this position must be able to lift and handle equipment materials up to 40 pounds; ascend and descend a ladder, as well as perform repetitive motions with arms, wrists, and hands. This position may also include utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) and working in an environment that contains biohazardous materials. May also include stationary position for an extended period of time, traverse campus/facility as needed, operate machinery such as computer, phone, copy machine, exposure to cold or hot temperatures.
COMPENSATION:
The expected hiring range for this position is $30.00 to $34.00/hourly, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
