The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research extension and teaching. The department’s mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.
Essential Job Duties
The primary responsibility for this position is to assist the Small Grains Specialist in coordinating and implementing an annual Extension program in small grain production across the state of North Carolina. Planning and implementation of the program will involve interactions with the North Carolina Small Grain Growers Association, producers, extension specialists, research faculty, county extension agents, and others in the small grains community. Responsibilities include identifying locations for workshops, agent-training and field events, acquiring seed for county agents and specialists, planting plots, scouting all locations at least monthly, coordinating plot management with Official Variety Test and research station personnel, growers, agents, and specialists, conducting plot management as needed, working with county agents to ensure quality events, and assist Extension Specialists with harvesting. Candidate will assist with data management for all field trials. Candidate will effectively utilize off-season and periods when fieldwork is slow to develop extension activities and materials for use at field days and other small grains educational events, assisting in grant development and co-authoring publications as appropriate to individual projects.
Travel is required including occasional overnight and weekend travel.

Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Crop Science, Plant Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or related field and at least three years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Crop Science, Plant Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Experience with small grains.
- Experience developing extension materials or giving extension presentations.
Required License(s) or Certification(s)
- Valid NC Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within 60 days of hire.
