Description

Under general supervision, the primary responsibility is providing classroom and lab instruction for Fire and/or EMS courses. Requires strong organizational skills, good communication skills, an ability to effectively deliver practical hands-on instruction and include technology in the teaching of classes, and familiarity with all aspects of the Fire and Emergency Medical Services fields. Must be accessible to students and maintain positive relationships with industry-related organizations and businesses. The successful applicant will be responsible for completing requirements to obtain and maintain a current teaching certification from the Wisconsin Technical College System Board

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities (include, but not limited to)

In line with the department strategic goals:

1. Effectively engage students in the learning environment through active learning strategies.
2. Promote and coordinate professional development opportunities for fire/ems instructors to further develop their teaching skill.
3. Increase marketing of Fire and EMS training programs and prepare competent fire/ems providers for local employers.

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent* with education or training preparing a person for the occupational area being taught. Appropriate training may include vendor, manufacturer, in-service or other structured on-the-job training in the occupation. *Educational equivalency: Occupational experience combined with education and training preparing a person for the occupation totaling 7 years or 14,000 hours shall be equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Each academic credit or equivalent credit shall be equal to 110 hours of occupational experience. (a major in a healthcare, fire service, emergency medical, or other related area is preferred; equivalency is determined by considering occupational experience and other formal education).
  • Twenty-four months (4,000 hours) of verifiable occupational experience as a fully qualified worker in the occupational area, of which 2,000 hours shall be within the previous five years. One year (2,000 hours) of related occupation experience may be waived if the occupational instructor has at least two years of post-secondary teaching experience in the appropriate occupational field within five years.
  • EMS Instructors only: Current State of Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) EMS Instructor I certification at the EMT level, Paramedic preferred, or ability to obtain at time of hire.
  • EMS instructors only: Current State of Wisconsin EMT licensure (or equivalent, including Registered Nurse, Physician Assistant, or Physician). Paramedic preferred.
  • FIRE instructors only: Current State of Wisconsin Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I Certification. FESI II preferred.
  • Eligibility for WCTC Credentialing System.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and instruct quality education programs.
  • American Heart Association BLS, ACLS and PALS Instructor preferred.
  • Technology-based, simulation, and scenario-based instruction experience desirable.
NOTE: An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired will also be considered.

 

Supplemental Information

  • Hours for this position will vary from Monday through Sunday including both daytime and evening hours. Adjunct instructors are currently expected to teach a minimum of 32 hours/semester per discipline teaching (16 hours/summer).
