About the Department

The School of Architecture offers undergraduate and graduate degrees including accredited Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.) and Master of Architecture (M.Arch.) degrees, a pre-professional Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture (BEDA), and a post-professional Master of Advanced Architectural Studies (MAAS). It also offers graduate certificates in City Design, Energy and Technology, and Public Interest Design, and a Concentration in History and Theory. The School of Architecture established the Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities Initiative in 2007 and more recently the College of Design launched the Peter A. Pappas Real Estate Development Program. The School of Architecture is part of the College of Design at North Carolina State University, which includes academic departments of Graphic and Experience Design and Industrial Design (GD/ID), Landscape Architecture and Environmental Planning (LAEP), Media Arts, Design and Technology (MAD Tech), a Ph.D. in Design, and a Doctor of Design (D.Des.)

The School of Architecture and College of Design have distinguished histories of influential design and educational programs that serve NC cities and towns, and is well-positioned to influence their future. This is supported by the extension and engagement mission of a research intensive land grant university.

Essential Job Duties

The School of Architecture is accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor. The role will offer opportunities to teach architecture studios at all levels, core lecture courses, and advanced seminars aligned with the candidate’s expertise. Applicants should demonstrate both experience and potential for future development in scholarly activities and teaching, particularly in the area of building design and technology, as well as design excellence.

The successful candidate will be able to integrate teaching activities with focus areas for scholarship, research, and/or practice. These may include material technologies, exterior assemblies, architectural detailing, sustainable and energy-efficient technologies, systems integration, and resilient design. We are particularly interested in candidates with an interest in contemporary design practice.

In addition, the ideal candidate will be expected to:
  • Prepare students to be successful in academic and professional settings by helping them to develop critical thinking and design skills.
  • Advance the School of Architecture’s research enterprise in topics that are critical to contemporary and future practice.
  • Engage professional practice and industry partners in North Carolina and/or beyond.
  • Seek collaborators within and across departments and colleges in the university.

Essential duties include:
  • Teach 18 credits per year (typically one 6-credit studio and one 3-credit course per semester in the School of Architecture programs).
  • Develop and maintain an active and significant research record.
  • Serve on school, college, and university committees and task forces.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Terminal Master’s Degree in Architecture

Other Required Qualifications

  • Grounded in contemporary design concepts, principles, practices, methods, and tools across a range of media.
  • Able to contribute to the excellence of the academic community through research, creative, and scholarly activities, teaching, and service.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional practice experience; teaching experience; post-professional degree, including a Ph.D. or Doctor degree.
  • Professional licensure in Architecture.
