The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. TRIO includes programs targeted to serve and assist low-income individuals, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline from middle school to post-baccalaureate programs. The Student Support Services (SSS) program is supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

The TRIO Student Navigator is responsible for helping facilitate the success of students enrolled in the Student Support Services (TRIO) Opportunity Program at Onondaga Community College. Through individual and group meetings, advising and coaching, developmental programs, and other engagement opportunities, the Navigator will assist students by implementing pre-identified strategies proven to create an educational pathway that supports student retention and success.

 
  • Major Responsibilities:
    Serve as success navigator to an identified cohort of students, focusing on consistent outreach, engagement, and delivery of student support services, and intrusively intervening as necessary to support the student through their degree culmination
  • Utilize Lazer Success (Starfish) and other related systems to monitor student success. Develop and implement intervention plans to address early alert concerns/referrals
  • Meet with students on a regular basis to develop and review individualized success plans
  • Partner within students' networks, including but not limited to their faculty, organization advisors, etc., to support student success while also assessing progress towards academic goals, persistence, and attendance
  • Coordinate student referrals to appropriate services to overcome social and economic barriers
  • Assist students with academic success by connecting them with academic tutoring and study groups, as well as various other support services offered by the program and the college.
  • Provide students with accurate information regarding college policies, procedures, and resources
  • Assist students in resolving problems and in developing skills to become self-advocates
  • Create and facilitate student-facing activities, including but not limited to orientation, open house, convocation, academic planning, and career and transfer events Organize, participate in, and facilitate field trips, cultural events, and specialized workshops on various professional development skills and college success topics
  • Participate in internal meetings with other employees and external meetings with community partners
  • Assist with the departmental publications and communications
  • Assist the Director with program growth efforts including attending recruiting events
  • Assist the Director with compiling and tracking data for grant related requirements
  • Perform other assignments as needed
 

Job Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or foreign equivalency
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience coaching, mentoring, or managing student caseloads in a secondary, post-secondary, or related setting
  • Experience working with diverse populations including those who are educationally and economically disadvantaged
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
 
  • Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Experience working with traditionally under-represented students, including low-income students, and organizations that serve the needs of these populations.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred; English and another language will be considered.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and effectively prioritize among competing needs
  • Ability to utilize assessment to guide initiative development
  • Ability to handle confidential information in a professional and sensitive manner
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse student population
  • Ability to creatively problem solve and work as part of a team that strives for continual growth
  • Possess a willingness to take initiative on new projects and embrace change
  • Comfort with technology and new technological systems with excellent computer skills

 
Additional Information:
 
Salary range is: $44,000-55,000 commensurate with credentials and relevant experience.
